Obesity and unhealthy diets are major causes of disease in the UK and globally. Marketing of foods high in fat salt and sugar (HFSS), including the use of price promotions (e.g. get two-for-the-price-of-one), are important contributory factors. Banning price promotions may help tackle these health issues. The four UK nations are at different stages of consideration or adoption of a mandatory ban on price promotions. However, two UK supermarket chains have already voluntarily banned their use on HFSS foods, in 2016 and 2022. This presents a valuable opportunity to understand the real-world public health and related impacts of a ban on the use of price promotions to inform adoption of mandatory bans.

Academic Advisory Panel for a new grant funded by UKRI on addressing dietary inequalities in Liverpool called “SCHOUSE: Supporting Communities in social Housing and Optimising Urban food System interventions for Equity”. This inter-disciplinary research project is a collaboration of academic researchers from the Universities of Liverpool and Cambridge and several non-academic partner organisations. These include housing associations and organisations working to improve food access in Liverpool. The overall aim of SCHOUSE is to produce new evidence on the drivers of dietary inequalities for residents in social housing and to co-design, deliver and evaluate place-based interventions that address these inequalities. The specific areas of interest are a mobile greengrocer van (known as the “Queen of Greens”) which provides access to fresh fruit and vegetables to food desert areas of Liverpool and the surrounding areas, and the use of fruit and vegetable vouchers, provided by Alexandra Rose Charity, for purchasing fruit and vegetables at the mobile greengrocer.

The PEEPO project aims to explore the associations between adversities experienced in the prenatal period and children’s later cognitive development and educational attainment. A series of reviews will be undertaken to explore specific adversities, including topics such as maternal stress, maternal malnutrition, teratogens and drugs, maternal sleep, and maternal metabolic disorders. The aim of the project is to better inform policy by examining which factors are important in pregnancy for influencing children’s later achievement. It will therefore enable effective recommendations for maternal care that stand to improve children’s chances of strong educational outcomes from the outset. The project will bring together research across disciplines for a better understanding of what we know, and crucially, what we need to know next, about the effects of adversity during pregnancy on long-term educational outcomes.
